During the 1991 Rio Summit, I founded the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) in order to provide an entrepreneurial perspective with respect to sustainable development. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) was established in 1995 as a result of the fusion between the BCSD and the World Industry Council for the Environment (WICE). Today, the WBCSD gathers more than170 of the most important global companies as members united by a common vision of sustainable development, based on three pillars: economic development, environmental balance, and social progress. The council sets out to promote business leadership as a catalyzer for change towards sustainable development, based on eco-efficiency, innovation, and corporate social responsibility.
In the year 2000, as recognition to what it considered pioneering work, WBCSD appointed me its honorary chairman.
